About us

Amatsiko is a registered community based organization (CBO) operating in South- Western Uganda, Kabale District, Kigezi region. The idea for the project was initially conceived in 2005 by Alex Atuheire, the project director, after he saw the detrimental effects that being orphaned or vulnerable
had on the future of the community's children.
Amatsiko Organisation works with different school in South Western Uganda by teaching and empowering them. In 2013, Amatsiko Organisation started a community school and currently there are 120 children who attend school at Amatsiko Preparatory School. The school provides free education and meals for 120 under-privileged children as well as board for 20 children and the rest stay with recognized guardians, but are supervised by Amatsiko staff.
Very few of the children in Uganda get a chance to go to school. However, at Amatsiko, we aim to bring hope to the hopeless ones, by enrolling orphans, vulnerable and abandoned children into school. Most of these children have lost their parents due to HIV virus.
In a way to reduce malnutrition cases in our children and to get enough food to eat, we sensitize communities and teach them how to make kitchen gardens and school gardens, as well as, how to protect the environment by introducing bee keeping projects in communities.
Volunteer Opportunities
You can impact the lives of numerous children and adults by volunteering to teach in our school. You don't have to be a teacher to volunteer in our school(s). You do not need to speak our local language however you will learn some local basic words.
The teaching program is open to all the volunteers whether they are on holiday, university or even just on career/ work break.
When you choose to volunteer with us, you will find a warm welcome awaiting for you from our children. You can teach English, making ‘Loombands', basic computer skills, or you can work alongside local teachers as a co-teacher.
Some of the schools we work with are often understaffed and poorly resourced, but you can help to improve this situation by volunteering your time in the classroom.
Often you will find that the only tools you have are a blackboard and a piece of chalk. This can be both challenging and exciting, as you have the freedom to use your creativity and think outside the box. You may find that the greatest tool for effective learning is yourself. The students will want to find out about you and the country you come from. They will want to know why you have chosen to come and teach them.
Whatever skills and talents you have, teaching in our schools offers a rewarding combination of the new, exciting, and life-changing, as well as the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.
