The Museum of the City of New York is a private, not-for-profit, educational institution founded in 1923 for the purpose of presenting the history of New York City. The Museum celebrates and interprets the city, educating the public about its distinctive character, especially its heritage of diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation. The Museum fulfills its mission through exhibitions, education programs, collections, and publications. The Museum's permanent and temporary exhibitions, in coordination with educational programming and publications, reflect the complexity of the history of New York City, the scope and depth of the Museum's collections, and the diversity of its audience.
