Description

English:

The Center for Information and Education for the Prevention of Drug Abuse (CEDRO), a Peruvian nonprofit organization, was founded in 1986 through an initiative of Peruvians of various professions and occupations. This institution is innovative, from its inception, because its approach is not limited only to the prevention of psychoactive substance use, but because its main purpose is to raise awareness about the production-trafficking-consumption chain through direct and masscommunication strategies.

Three main areas inspireCEDRO's work: 1) Respect for community initiatives. 2) The inclusion of social diversity, with creative management of the differences, and 3) the production of knowledge through research and systematization of field experience.

Espanol:

What an amazing experience ! I lived 6 months in Peru and worked 1 month with Cedro. Those people are incredible and we need more like them, they are right: every child has the right to education, love and fun. Help them as much as you can. Perhaps we just played with those little boys and girls but for them I think taht was more. That was the opportunity to meet people, to share with them and most of all: to have fun. The best thing in this world is to see a smile on a child's face.

Thank you for all Kike, Paola and the staff from Cedro and Habla bateria, for what you are doing every day.

Subject: My experience as a volunteer at CEDRO- Habla Bateria

    Hello everyone,
I am 16 years old and I volunteered in Lima over the summer of 2012 and I am going back over the summer of 2013! It was the best summer of my life. I learned to much about myself, about the people I worked with and and about Peru in general. I met the most amazing people ever who I still keep in contact with.
This is what I did in the time I was in Lima, Peru
    Habla Bateria:
Habla Bateria is an amazing group of high school students in Rimac and La Victoria, Lima. They are all leaders in their communitites and want to make a difference. HB focuses on the prevention of alcohol, drugs and violence. We worked with younger kids in the elementary and middle school levels. We did workshops during, after school and on the weekends including acting and guitar lessons. We organized a flash mob and did it three times in very busy areas of Lima including the Giron Union and Gamarra.
    TICS:
We worked with the teachers in six different school to teach them how to use technology to their advantage in the classroom and at home in order to engage the kids more. This hopefully would make the students more interested and wiling to learn.
    Group Homes:
I also went to three different group homes, two for boys and one for girls. These kids have been through a lot and for them it is nice to have someone come in from another country. It shows that people actually care about them and it means more to them then you may think. They are all amazing, happy, fun, encouraging, and inspiring teenagers who will make you a better person without you realizing it. We would make food, paint the home, play games, play soccer, do crafts, talk and have fun.
I strongly recommend volunteering with CEDRO! It is so much fun being with all the students, kids, adults and other volunteers. You become friends with everyone. In the end, no matter how long you stay, whether it be two weeks or two years, you will have made yourself a new family!
This is my experience. I volunteered for six weeks. HB is constantly changing the activities they do so your experience as a volunteer might be different. If you have any questions about what you would be doing with HB contact Kike Pareja. He is the volunteer coordinator.
Thank you and I hope you all volunteer with CEDRO - Habla Bateria!
