FACT SHEET

§ The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is the nation’s leading source for quality Hispanic engineers and technical talent. SHPE was established in 1974, and is a non-profit 501(c)6 membership organization.

§ SHPE empowers and inspires Hispanics in all aspects of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, academic development and professional growth.

§ Today, SHPE is made up of 10,000 student, professional, corporate and government members who are committed to increasing the number of Hispanics in the STEM professions, education and research.

§ SHPE has 250 Student Chapters affiliated with major universities and colleges and 75 Professional Chapters throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

§ In 2003, SHPE established a 501(c)3 foundation to meet the growing need for financial commitment to increasing the education, talent and knowledge of pre-college, college, and graduate students in the nation. The SHPE Foundation is one of the country’s leading organizations committed to that endeavor.

§ The 2011 SHPE Conference will be in Anaheim, CA Oct. 26-30, 2011. There will be more than 5,000 of the United States’ top student talent, cutting-edge corporations and governmental agencies in attendance, to advance the STEM professions with workshops, hands-on skills development, a Career Expo, competitions, and a one-of-a-kind Awards Show.

§ The SHPE Conference offers educational, technical and career opportunities for professional and student engineers as well as math and science education programs for middle and high school students.

§ Pre-college students must pre-register to attend the SHPE Conference through the SHPE Foundation. College students and professionals are highly encouraged to pre-register as well, but some on-site registration will be open to those who do not require hotel accommodations. The general public may attend the Career Expo on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011 by registering on-site for a $50 fee.

§ No matter the state of the economy, companies are always looking to hire quality, diverse technical talent.

§ SHPE and its Foundation offer more than $2 million in scholarships and internships for college students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and math.

§ SHPE and the SHPE Foundation offer a variety of programs from elementary school to the executive boardroom, including community outreach, hands-on science activities, summer camps, scholarships, internships, science bowl competitions, professional development seminars and leadership training.

§ The mission of SHPE to inspire new generations of Hispanics to pursue engineering and other STEM careers is more critical today than ever. Hispanics comprise only 5.8 percent of engineers despite being a growing population in America.
