About us

SOLVE brings Oregonians together to improve the environment and build a legacy of stewardship.

Oregon is the land of pioneers. Modern-day pioneers. We’re leaders, not followers. We embrace originality. We’re experimental and environmental.

SOLVE was formed in 1969 by pioneering Governor Tom McCall to mobilize our community on a mission to protect and preserve this beautiful and unique place we call home.

Back then, our call-to-action was to Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism (SOLV). Fast forward over 45-years. While we remain true to our original calling, we have evolved to SOLVE broader environmental challenges; moving from an acronym to action. You may know us best from our annual beach clean-ups, but that is just a drop in the ocean compared to what we do every day to keep Oregon clean and green.

Our vision is an Oregon with healthy land, water, and air. To make this real, we: (1) Clean, (2) Restore, (3) Educate, and (4) Involve.

  • Clean and restore land and rivers through removal of trash and invasive plants; and through the planting and maintenance of native trees and shrubs.
  • Educate through service-learning on-site and in schools.
  • Involve our community through volunteerism in seven annual programs.
