America’s Promise Alliance is the nation’s largest partnership organization dedicated to improving the lives of young people. For fourteen years we have been committed to providing the Five Promises all children, especially our most vulnerable. These Promises include Caring Adults, Safe Places, A Healthy Start, An Effective Education, and Opportunities to Help Others.
We believe the high school dropout crisis is the best indicator of how we as a nation are failing our young people, and therefore that is the focal point of our work with more than 400 national partner organizations. Through the collective power of our cross-sector partners, we raise awareness about the high school dropout crisis, drive policy change, and support communities in building multi-sector coalitions to transform the lives of young people.
In March 2010, the Alliance launched a ten-year campaign with President Obama, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, and Gen. and Mrs. Colin Powell. The campaign, “Grad Nation – Mobilizing America to End the Dropout Crisis,” has as its goals:
1. To achieve a 90% high school graduation rate by 2020, and
2. To see that every child graduates high school prepared for college and the 21st century workforce, and goes on to complete at least one year of post-secondary education.
