About Us

Established in 1911, Phelps Stokes is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to build self-sustainable global communities by fostering and nurturing a new generation of global leaders, educators, entrepreneurs, students, and citizens, with particular attention to the needs of people of color and indigenous affiliation.

In its century of service to underserved communities, Phelps Stokes has initiated, conducted, and sponsored hallmark educational surveys and research studies that have resulted in the improvement of education for African American, Native Americans, and Africans. It has worked with and supported notable individuals such as James Aggrey, Kwame Nkrumah, Langston Hughes, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and W.E.B. Dubois, and has been a founding partner of many landmark institutions, including the Booker Washington Institution, Liberia’s first and largest vocational/technical training school; the African Student Aid Fund, the Association of African American Ambassadors, the Caribbean Cultural Association, the Jackie Robinson Foundation, and the South African Institution of Race Relations.
