Description

Deccan Heritage Foundation (DHF) is a non-profit organization founded by George Michell and Helen Philon, scholars on Deccan art and architecture. DHF is dedicated to the preservation, conservation and education of the natural and cultural heritage of the Deccan region of India.

What is the Deccan?

Deccan refers to a region in central-southern India that begins to the south of the gangetic plains, and is bound by the Arabian Sea on the west and the Bay of Bengal on the east. Deccan is derived from the Sanskrit word dákṣiṇa, meaning "south". The Deccan is endowed with a distinct character, unique topography, abundant natural resources, a complex history and magnificent historical sites (such as the Buddhist cave-temples, temple complexes and remains of a historical cities, mosques, tombs, palaces and forts), and rich artistic traditions in music, dance, textiles, literature and crafts.

Why is heritage important?

•Heritage helps sustain the environmental, cultural and historical fabric of a society…ultimately helping to create a more sustainable world.

•Heritage is often irreplaceable - placing the responsibility on the current generation.

•Heritage is critical in maintaining the cultural identity of a nation in a globalizing world.

•Heritage helps create local meaning in a global world

Heritage Education

DHF believes that children can have meaningful and memorable experiences with heritage that can stimulate learning. The program hopes to create synergies between the school curriculum and informal experiential learning approaches, to raise awareness and inspire young people to become stewards and advocates for heritage.
