About us

The Southern Education Foundation is a public charity based in Atlanta, Georgia, that traces its roots back to 1867, when philanthropist George Peabody established a dedicated fund to advance education in the American South. That fund and three others were joined in l937 to create "SEF."

SEF programs advance fairness, achievement and excellence in education, from pre-school through higher education. SEF engages in policy analysis, advocacy, educational outreach, research, technical assistance and other related activities to help close the educational access and achievement gap.
