Description

The Rockefeller State Park Preserve is characterized by a variety of habitats, including wetlands, woodlands, meadows, fields and a lake. Carriage paths traverse the park, leading into shady river lanes, intimate wooded paths and panoramic vistas. The preserve is ideal for strolling, jogging, cross-country skiing and horseback riding. Nature enthusiasts enjoy birdwatching, photography and sketching. Anglers will find the lake and Pocantico River excellent fishing spots. The Visitor Center hosts art and cultural exhibits. The Preserve has an annual attendance of 300,000 visitors.

Among the objectives for Park Preserves according to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation are:
To maintain the integrity of park land, flora, fauna, and scenic vistas; preserve and maintain historical and archeological sites; and provide for the management of all unique, rare, or endangered species of flora and fauna within the park preserve areas;
To provide for passive recreational activities such as picnicking, horseback riding, fishing, hiking, and photography within such park preserve areas; and
To ensure that the types and intensity of use of such park preserve lands is commensurate with the goal of maintaining their ecological viability and balance.
To interpret the cultural history and landscape architecture of the park preserve including but not limited to its carriage roads; Rockwood Hall; and the agricultural orientation/activities of its pastures and adjacent Rockefeller properties;
To engender a sense of stewardship with our public, and to future generations through educational and public programs; and through a active volunteer corps and intership program.
