Alterna's mission is to advance innovative, entrepreneurial solutions to local development challenges. Alterna creates and operates hubs for social and environmental entrepreneurship in underserved areas of the world, bridging the gap between field-based development entrepreneurs and the resources that can accelerate their impact.
Where We Work:
Alterna's flagship Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is based in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Located in Guatemala's western highlands, Quetzaltenango is the country's second most populous city, and is an important regional hub for the surrounding rural and semi-rural communities, which are home to a predominantly indigenous population.
What We Do:
Alterna brings together a multidisciplinary team of exceptional entrepreneurs, product designers, market specialists, and community development experts, to support the following programs:
Social Venture Incubation: Alterna identifies opportunities for innovative, high-impact businesses in priority areas such as energy, green technology, health, and agriculture, and provides direct in-house support and resources to take these businesses from concept to launch.
Community Entrepreneurship Capacity Development: Alterna provides business assistance, training, and mentoring to community-based entrepreneurs that are addressing important community needs.
