Little Kids Rock

Description

Little Kids Rock provides free music classes and musical instruments to children in our public schools. Our unique program focuses on popular music styles such as rock, funk, blues, rap, and hip-hop. Our curriculum reflects the diverse cultural backgrounds of our students. Participating students also compose, perform and record their own music.

Little Kids Rock believes that music is a critical component of a first-rate education. Many schools have been stripped of their music programs. These cuts have had a disproportionately large impact on children from low-income backgrounds. Our programming restores music to its rightful place in the academic lives of the kids in our public schools. Making music is, by definition, a creative act. Children who know the joys of expressing themselves creatively are less likely to channel their energy into destructive outlets. This builds confidence and self-esteem. These benefits spill over into all of the other academic subjects. Music exists as an art, a craft and an industry in a larger social context. The world of music does not stand still and neither should music education.
