FoodCorps is a new national nonprofit organization that seeks to use youth service to increase vulnerable children's understanding of, engagement with and access to healthy food. At the center of our work is an AmeriCorps national service program slated to launch in ten states this summer. Through our AmeriCorps program, FoodCorps will recruit young adults for a yearlong term of paid public service building and tending school gardens, conducting hands-on nutrition education and sourcing farm-fresh food for school meals in high-obesity, limited-resource communities. The organization's ultimate goal is to combat childhood obesity while investing in a diverse new generation of farmers and public health leaders.
FoodCorps is a dynamic organization with strong potential for growth, working at the intersection of childhood obesity, environmental sustainability, and equitable access to fresh and local food. The organization uses a model of national service that allows it to leverage federal funds for significant private and philanthropic investment in the public good.
