Philanthropic Goals:

The goals of YAWI as a philanthropic institution are:

i.                   To invest in the efforts of African women who are engaged in innovative activities to develop their communities.

ii.                  To increase the amount of resources available to women and women’s projects in Kenya.

iii.                To advocate with other donors and policy makers for resources to empower African women.

iv.                To establish alliances and build strategic relationships with other local/ national/international organizations and individuals who are committed to promoting and protecting women’s rights.

We take pride in our ability to create approaches and interventions that have change the lives and outcomes of numerous women and their families Kenya.

We Have crested interventions in the following areas: -

a)     Light is a Basic Need Project

The project was designed to provide 10,000 rural women in Kenya with solar lanterns to light their homes. Most women in rural areas have no access to electricity and have no hope of getting access to electricity in the near future.

YAWI sought to provide clean, renewable and free sources of energy through provision of solar-powered lanterns that were made affordable under an instilment payment plan.

b)     Gender-Based Violence Prevention Paralegal Project

The project was designed to train 100 women community-based paralegals who would in-turn have indirect impact on 5000 people in the two slums within the Nakuru Town area. Community-based paralegals have a deep knowledge of the people they serve and can provide solutions not just to individuals, but to the groups too. Perhaps and most importantly, community-based paralegals are able to empower their clients, helping them to become aware of their rights and act to advance their interests

It is hoped that by providing judicial advice services, community-based paralegals can offer a solution to the challenge of women not being able to afford high legal fees in instances of GBV and as a result finding a means of recourse or redress for the harm done to them. In addition, YAWI in partnership with a local organization, we have provided women with a platform to report cases of GBV and other criminal activities to relevant authorities on time with real time response. Using a SMS code that is anonymous MULIKA Uhalifu (torch out crime)

c)     Livelihood program (adaptability for dignity)

YAWI offers skills to women and girls to ensure they secure sustainable source of income. One of the current project is provision of an alternative source of livelihood for low income women in slum areas in Nakuru town county by equipping them with tailoring skills, entrepreneurial skills and capital to establish viable and profitable business in tote bag manufacturing and distributions. Most of these women have little or no education at all and they rely on odd jobs or poorly run business to fed for their families. The burn of plastic bags was a blow in their source of income since, they mostly depended on jobs in production process and retailing. Their vulnerability and the mare fact they have no skills qualifies them for this project so that they can trained.R PARTNERS
