Through the power of storytelling, Streetside Stories values and cultivates young people's voices, fostering educational equity to build community, literacy and arts skills.
Streetside Stories is an arts education non-profit that uses storytelling, interactive theatre activities and digital storytelling to help a diverse group of middle school students in San Francisco public schools to develop their reading, writing and speaking skills.
We work in San Francisco public middle and elementary schools teaching autobiographical writing and digital storytelling workshops during the school day and after school. Our curriculum is standards based and fun! Each year we produce an anthology of student stories that is available at SF libraries and independent bookstores. We also produce a DVD anthology of mini-movies as part of our Tech Tales program.

Dominic from James Denman Middle School tells the timeless tale of being upset by a new baby, and then realizing a new friend and playmate in the family can be kind of awesome. "Three things in my life were challenging: the new sister, moving away to a new home, and my parents were like roosters, waking up because of my sister." This video was made in Tech Tales (Fall 2012), Streetside's media arts and literacy program for 7th graders. It was published in Streetside's 2012 e-anthology, Holler! |

The first day of school is always hard, but for Kimberly from James Denman Middle School, her recent move from the Philippines made her extra shy. Thankfully, it didn't stop her from making new friends. "Just one more step I told myself, walking into my new class." This video was made in Tech Tales (Fall 2011), Streetside Stories' media arts and literacy program for 7th graders. It was published in the DVD portion of Streetside's 2012 anthology, The Word Is Out, and was the winner of the 2012 Young at Art award for Media Arts. |

Lueni, from our DigiLit program at the Samoan Community Development Center, screened her film "We Are Samoa" at our 4th annual Donor + Partner Appreciation Night on November 7, 2012. Afterward, she talked about how Streetside has affected her--in particular, how not getting into Streetside's anthology in the 6th grade really motivated her to improve her writing, and years later, work hard on her movie. Watch the film Lueni made (and sang in!) at: www.youtube.com |
