About Us

The City of Detroit experienced a substancial decrease in total crime figures since 2012, and this encouraging downward trend continues. The Wayne State University Center for Urban Studies, through its AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program, is one of many organizations working together in targeted neighborhoods throughout the city to accomplish this improvement to public safety and overall quality of life. Members of the community are invited to apply to serve in the AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program, and be a part of building a safer future for Detroit.

The AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program collaborates with local non-profits, businesses, police departments and residents to achieve a permanent reduction in crime by improving levels of neighborhood guardianship and reducing victim attractiveness and susceptibility.

AmeriCorps members partner with residents and community organizations to establish block clubs and Community Patrols to identify and problem-solve issues of public safety.AmeriCorps members have undertaken other approaches to reduce crime in Detroit. To date, AmeriCorps members have conducted more than 300 abandoned or empty home board-ups and more than 440 property clean-ups.

Our targeted neighborhoods include Midtown/North End; Bagley-University District; Cody-Gompers; Jefferson East; Morningside-East English Village-Cornerstone; Osborn-Denby; and Southwest.
