Having opened in August 2009, Coney Island Preparatory Public Charter School currently serves 270 scholars in grades 5, 6, and 7. The school will add an additional ninety 5th grade scholars every year until it grows to serve students in grades 5 – 12. The mission of the school is to prepare every student to succeed in the college and career of their choice.
Coney Island Prep is a school of firsts—it is the first public charter school in South Brooklyn, and the first public charter school to locate in a New York City Housing Authority housing development. The school is also incredibly diverse:

- · 10% are Asian

- · 82% of scholars live in poverty
- · 23% are special education scholars
- · 13% are English Language Learners
After just two years, Coney Island Prep was rated the 3rd best charter school and the 5th best middle school in all of New York City, based on the Department of Education's annual progress report.
