About Us

The Khulula Foundation is a public charity founded in Washington, DC and operating in both the United States and South Africa. Our mission is to develop the next generation of change agents from low-income communities in South Africa by providing them with a transformative, university preparatory education within their community.

The Khulula Foundation fulfills its mission by providing financial support to Kgololo Academy, which seeks to fulfil a critical void in Alexandra Township, through the establishment of the first Grade R through Grade 12 independent school in this community, whose ultimate goal is to place all students on the path to university.

The education philosophy of Kgololo Academy supposes that teaching must be an act of social justice designed to empower students with the content knowledge and non-academic skills necessary to effect the change they seek in their own lives and to serve as change agents in their communities in the promotion of a more just world. Kgololo means “to set free” in Tswana and our overarching goal is to enable learners to attain the freedom that an academically challenging education steeped in social justice can bring. In this environment learners will be engaged in course work designed to prompt them to question and think critically about the world around them. Learners will master content in at least two languages, mathematics, science, social studies, technology, and the arts and will have the ability to apply their knowledge to relevant and current situations, problems, and experiences.
