Waterkeeper Alliance is an environmental non profit organization that supports and connects over 150 local Waterkeeper programs – full-time paid advocates who serve as investigator, scientist, educator and lawyer for their waterway. The Alliance also runs national and international environmental campaigns. Our approach is powerful because our national and international advocacy is based on the real grassroots connection that Waterkeepers enjoy with their community.
The Waterkeeper concept started on New York's Hudson River where a coalition of commerical and recreational fishermen mobilized in 1966 to reclaim the Hudson from its polluters. All other Waterkeeper programs have been modeled after Hudson Riverkeeper, which orchestrated a historical three decade clean-up of the Hudson River. Now the Waterkeeper coalition is among the fastest growing of America's grass roots environmental movements and is quickly becoming a unique force for environmental change.
