The idea of the Be the Change Academy – Kenya (BTCA-Kenya) is to extend to every young jobless person with verifiable interest in starting or growing their enterprises, but who are limited by either management skill deficiencies, lack of business ideas and/or start up capital and currently living in low income areas of Kisumu County. The organisation seeks to help these young people who otherwise have very little or no chances to gain business knowledge and/or to have access to micro-financing institutions/banks, because they are most often individuals or small groups of people, who do not possess collateral and therefore these young people are stagnated in their level of poverty without a way to improve their living situation. This constitutes our niche as an organization.
Instead of property or savings, we use the training programme (20 training lessons over a period of ten weeks) of the Academy as well as the business plans, we help to develop individually, and also the mutual relationship we create during the training sessions, as collateral for distributing loans. The loans are an incentive for the very best and innovative candidates and business ideas from the trainings. Only the best trainees will receive a loan from the BTCA-Kenya to maximize chances of success of the youth-run business ventures. Trainees of the BTCA-Kenya will not only be training in entrepreneurial skills, such as market research or financial literacy, but also sustainability, most importantly environmental sustainability.
