Kid Power is a civics-based organization that provides academic, artistic, service-learning, and nutrition opportunities for youth in underserved neighborhoods in the District of Columbia. Kid Power empowers youth to become informed and engaged advocates for change in their own lives and in their communities.
Kid Power provides after school programming to approximately 300 youth from underserved communities in the District of Columbia at 12 program sites throughout the District (7 DCPS Elementay Schools, 4 DCPS Middle Schools, and 1 DPR Site).
Our main programs include: The Citizenship Project: Using a literacy-building and civic engagement curriculum, Kid Power students investigate the fundamental building blocks of citizenship, produce visual and performing art works, and implement youth-led community action projects.
CookieTime: With the assistance of the CakeLove bakery, middle school students operate a small baking business and use the profits to fund local community projects and service trips outside the District of Columbia.
VeggieTime: Students study food issues and environmental sciences operate citywide urban gardens, sell produce and prepared foods at markets and restaurants, and use the profits to support home and community service projects focused on nutrition.
Alumni: Kid Power provides academic support, college counseling, SAT prep, and summer employment to graduates of our after school programming
Summer Camp: During the summer, Kid Power's Elementary School Camp and Middle School Leadership Academy provide academic and artistic enrichment, recreational trips, and community service projects. Kid Power camps are generally reserved for school-year participants.
