There are many ways to get involved with HORD. Serve from home by recruiting volunteers, fundraising, marketing HORD and helping out with website development. Experience the excitement and wonders of East Africa by volunteering with us on-site in a number of projects: teaching, Coaching, Youth mentoring, HIV/AIDS outreach and education, community development, fundraising and website maintenance. Whatever your interest or talents, we have room for you at HORD. We accept individual volunteers arrive on the 1st and the 15th of every month.

About specific projects:

TEACHING:

Volunteers will work with students at the orphanage and at Kawempe area boarding schools. School terms vary annually but are likely to be: Feb 1st to April 15th, May 20th to November 30th. While we accept volunteers on a rolling basis, it is recommended that volunteers interested in teaching arrive before the start of each term. Schools have a basic curriculum, but you will be planning your lessons daily. While a TEFL is not required to work with us, we encourage volunteers to have some previous experience working with children, either as a camp counsellor, coach, teacher, or tutor.

HIV/AIDS OUTREACH AND EDUCATION: volunteers will work with our orphans to educate them about HIV/AIDS prevention methods and to reduce stigmas associated with the virus. You will meet with youth leaders and engage in public speaking to educate the areas young population. These education sessions tend to stress hygiene, condom use, family planning, women's rights and education, small business development and the addressing of myths surrounding HIV and its spread. You will also visit ill patients in town to offer them support and to better link them to the outside world (many people with HIV are alienated by those around them), to brainstorm income generating projects for people affected by HIV/AIDS and to offer friendship to those in need. This is an excellent opportunity to better experience what life is like for marginalised populations in Uganda.

COACHING:

People interested in coaching spend time with the children at Juniors Primary school – Kawempe and Burakwana Primary school in Amolatar. We are interested in any form of athletics volunteers care to teach. Bringing sporting equipment with you to Uganda is greatly appreciated. As with teaching, a P.E or exercise area and in working with children.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND YOUTH MENTORING

Community development and youth mentoring projects involve providing counselling, care and education to rural populations, around Namasale – Amolatar districts. This is a great opportunity for people interested in vocational education, economic development and income generating projects, or counselling. This volunteer opportunity is less structured than others and allows volunteers to create their own developmental ideas. People with backgrounds in counselling. Education, public health, economics or international developments are preferred.

FUNDRAISING

We always need help fundraising! Volunteers can fundraise from home or from Uganda. We have had people generate funds through contacting family members, their sororities/fraternities, getting pledges by running marathons and 5k's, hosting bake sales, yard sales, and movie nights, partnering with their offices in gift matching programs and many other different methods that have greatly helped HORD. Fundraising in Uganda also involves sourcing markets for handicrafts; grant writing, applying from various monetary awards ad file maintenance.

WEBSITE MAINTENANCE

Is exactly what the job states! Website development and maintenance. This can involve updating our website with new photos, helping our website development director to answer inquiries that come through the site, posting our site on various volunteer forums, and helping to promote HORD, and its volunteer programs. This can be done from Uganda or home.

Housing: All volunteers live together in a shared bungalow on a secure compound. Housing is within close proximity to volunteer placements to allow for easy travel. Our staff members, Dianah and Phillips provide all meals to volunteers and help with house cleaning, though volunteers are encouraged to help out. We have several vegetarians on staff so volunteers who do not eat meat are taken care of.

Cost of Volunteering;

Volunteering with HORD is more affordable than most organisations. The cost to volunteer with us for two weeks is 380 USD. Your payment covers pre-departure support, airport pickup, first night accommodation in a hotel, and transport to your placement, food and housing while volunteering, supervision and guidance from experienced local staff and a donation to the organisation. Additional weeks are 200 USD each. In order to secure any placement we require a 200USD non-refundable deposit. This is wired directly to our bank account. The deposit is applied to your total program fee.

The fee does not cover airline tickets, visas, vaccinations, extra leisure activities, or medical services. You will likely need $30 -$50 a week to support a basic life which includes drinking water, internet, transport and a few western treats such as coffee and chocolate. Safaris, Khana tour lines and trips to other countries are commonly pursued by volunteers, but are a bit more expensive. We are happy to put volunteers in touch with tourist operations that provide these excursions. We also encourage volunteers to purchase a Lonely Planet Guide or similar book before arriving so that they can better plan their visit.

We will send you and application specific to your chosen project – once it is returned to us we will process the application and work with you to best suit your volunteer goals and needs. We accept both individual volunteers as well as groups.

Please email us your resume or a list of your skills/interests, and a statement of interest telling us why you want to come live and volunteer in Uganda. Try to apply well in advance of when you are travelling.

You must arrive around the 1st or 15th of the month. We have a 2 week minimum and a 3 months maximum. If you want to stay longer, we will work it out if the space is available. You need to be at least 16 years old and above, speak English, and be in relatively good health to volunteer with HORD.
