Beginning with Children Charter School (BwCCS) opened in 1992 as an innovative partnership with the Beginning with Children Foundation, Pfizer, the United Federation of Teachers and the Department of Education and converted to charter status effective September 2001. BwCCS is changing how public education is delivered to urban, underserved children. BwCCS serves 450 students in grades K-8 at its elementary school and middle school campuses, of which 67% are eligible for free or reduced lunch, 15% are special education students and 93% are students of color. BwCCS also is one of the first charter schools to pioneer sharing space within a DOE building with its middle school campus.
