About Us

Boston Partners in Education enhances the academic achievement and nurtures the personal growth of Boston’s public school students by providing them with focused, individualized, in-school volunteer support. With the commitment and involvement of the entire community, all students in Boston will develop the skills, self-confidence and motivation to recognize and achieve their full potential.

Boston Partners in Education has been supporting teachers and students in Boston Public Schools (BPS) for over 50 years. BPS teachers nominate students to work with one of our trained academic mentors. We recruit, screen, train, match and support our academic mentors as they help students gain the skills, self-confidence, and motivation they need to succeed in school and in life.

Our academic mentors are community members who volunteer in pre K-12 classrooms in the Boston Public Schools. Mentors offer support in any subject area, though we focus on ELA and math for grades K-8. They commit to spending the year with the same student, or small group of students, every week for an hour a week during the school day. Ideally, the match stays together over the course of a few years, thus forming a bond that goes beyond academics.

Our academic mentoring programs not only help students reach their academic goals, but also give them the confidence to achieve beyond the classroom. Through the committed work of our volunteers, most students achieve increased interest in academics, improved academic performance in math and ELA, increased self-confidence and improved habits of mind.

We focus on reaching students who might otherwise "fall through the cracks"—those children who have gaps in their learning, are struggling academically and personally, and can succeed with the encouragement and guidance of a caring adult academic mentor.
