Green City Force's (GCF) mission is to break the cycle of poverty, preparing urban youth to succeed in their chosen careers by engaging them in service, training and work experiences related to the clean energy economy. In doing so, GCF encourages them to lead socially and environmentally responsible lives.
Serving full-time in teams for 6 months, our corps members will increase energy efficiency in homes and raise awareness about energy conservation.
GCF is based on the principles of a Clean Energy Corps, developed by a national coalition of advocates for an inclusive green economy. We aim to demonstrate the potential of a city-wide Clean Energy Corps in New York City.
Our program blends successful national service and green jobs training strategies and will provide members with: - the chance to be on the front lines in greening NYC by painting cool roofs, weatherizing low-income homes, educating citizens about energy efficient practices, and mobilizing New Yorkers in service to lower energy bills and improve sustainability block by block; - an engaging opportunity to learn marketable skills while gaining hands-on experience; - stipends - classroom training, supportive services, and entry-level certifications; - links to employment, apprenticeships and community college programs in energy efficiency and renewable energy.
