NCLR is the largest constituency-based national Hispanic organization, serving all Hispanic nationality groups in all regions in the country. Established in 1968 to reduce poverty and discrimination, and improve life opportunities for Hispanic Americans, NCLR has over 250 formal affiliate organizations - Hispanic community-based [501(c)3] organizations - in 38 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. NCLR works towards its goal of making a difference in Hispanic America by using two primary, complementary approaches: 1) capacity-building assistance, including training, technical assistance, reference materials, and pass-through funding to support and strengthen Hispanic community-based organizations at the local level, and 2) applied research, policy analysis, and advocacy at the national level. NCLR strengthens these efforts with public information, media and arts activities, an Annual Conference, and other special projects.
