Bahia Street breaks cycles of poverty and violence through quality education for impoverished girls and young women living in the shantytowns of Salvador, Brazil. It provides a comprehensive education in all basic subjects for 75 girls who gain an university-preparatory education and all of the socio-emotional support they need to be strong women and effective advocates for their communities. Girls attend public school each morning to maintain a close connection with their neighborhoods, coming to the Bahia Street Center each afternoon for a meal, classes, and citizenship experiences that shape their sense of self and community. Bahia Street Brazil was founded in 1997. It is co-located with its partner organization, Sou Digna/ I Am Worthy, which serves women through job training and university support.
