Sex slavery is real in the United States. You can see it thriving in any community across our country – just look for it in strip clubs, shady massage parlors, web sites, and even newspapers that sell sex services. Human beings are simply commodities to predators, because they can be sold over and over again to different people, unlike drugs or weapons. This is a $32 billion industry, and is the fastest growing in the world. From the 2008-2010 Federal Investigation of Human Trafficking, 99.7% of sex trafficking victims were U.S. Citizens. These shocking numbers prove that modern-day slavery is alive and well in the United States.
What does modern day slavery look like in America?
In the United States, traffickers are commonly referred to as "pimps", and they coerce youth to enter the sex industry through a variety of recruitment and control mechanisms through strip clubs, street-based prostitution and escort services. American pimps particularly target vulnerable youth, such as runaways and the homeless. The average age of entry into prostitution in the U.S. is twelve to fourteen years old.
Pimps have declared war on our American youth. For pimps, teenagers are not human beings, but property, and are seen as simply a means to gain profit. Pimps know that when it comes to making money, the younger their victim, the better. They know where to find vulnerable youth; from hitting the streets to hanging out at parties, malls, school grounds, movie theaters, or recruiting over Internet chat lines. A common pimp's motto is, "If you give a girl a little bit of heaven, you can take her all the way to hell." This statement alone should make us mad enough to fight for our youth by supporting the work of Shoe Revolt.

The symbol of our American flag declares that slavery is not welcome, and freedom is every human being's right. We must accomplish victory over this form of modern day slavery. However, in the United States there is an immense problem that requires an even bigger solution. How do we fund programs that are rescuing and restoring victims? Shoe Revolt is the solution; it is a unique social enterprise that fights modern day slavery in the United States through purchasing power. It takes donations of new or (gently) used shoes and sells them on an online store. 100% of profits go to programs that support survivors of the sex industry.
