About Us

The SAG-AFTRA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive, educational and state-of-the-art resources to SAG-AFTRA members, including actors, voiceover artists, broadcasters, dancers and other artists. The Foundation believes that contributions made to our culture by performing artists are not only valuable, but also essential.

Although some of the best-known and highest profile actors are indeed well-paid for their craft, the vast majority of the union’s 150,000 members are not. A significant majority is unemployed at any given time, and they rely on the educational programs, professional development, health benefits, and emergency assistance provided them free of charge by the Foundation. The ability of the Foundation to maintain and grow these services contributes directly to the vitality of art and entertainment around the world and its continued growth and vibrancy allow it to nurture the actors and performers who entertain and inspire us well into the future.

In 2016, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation awarded over $400,000 in scholarships to more than 100 SAG-AFTRA artists and their dependents, provided over $1 million in emergency financial assistance and catastrophic health funds to over 500 families in need, provided free career-building programming to 42,000 members nationwide, and offered 900 free workshops, classes and professional development seminars to their members. Additionally, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation aims to serve the public at large through its signature online children’s literacy program Storytime Online. Featuring celebrated actors reading award-winning children’s books alongside creatively animated illustrations, Storytime Online brings a love of reading into classrooms and homes worldwide, receiving over 12 million views every month.

Additionally, in October 2016, the Foundation opened the Robin Williams Center for Entertainment and Media, a brand new, 4,000-square-foot screening room and educational space located at 54th Street and 8th Avenue in New York City. This premiere Center will offer free professional programming to more than 150,000 artists over the next 20 years, and serve as the new home to both the SAG-AFTRA Foundation's Conversations and The Business programs in New York City.
