The Microcredit Summit Campaign is a project of the RESULTS Educational Fund, a U.S.-based grassroots advocacy organization committed to ending hunger and poverty. The Campaign brings together microcredit practitioners, advocates, educational institutions, donor agencies, international financial institutions, non-governmental organizations and others involved with microcredit to promote best practices in the field, to stimulate the interchanging of knowledge, and to work towards reaching bold measurable goals.
Our Goals: The Campaign is working to ensure that 1) 175 million of the world's poorest families, especially the women of those families, are receiving credit for self-employment and other financial and business services by the end of 2015; and 2) 100 million families rise above the US$1 a day threshold adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP), between 1990 and 2015.
The Campaign is currently undertaking 4 programs:

Washington, DC — Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Grameen Bank Founder Muhammad Yunus, US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues Melanne Verveer, and Spanish Secretary of State for International Cooperation Soraya Rodriguez Ramos joined Microcredit Summit Campaign leadership, current Director Larry Reed and then-Director Sam Daley-Harris, to launch the State of the Microcredit Summit Campaign Report 2011. www.microcreditsummit.org The report addresses controversies within the field of microfinance and announced a new initiative under development, the Seal of Excellence for Poverty Outreach and Transformation in Microfinance, which is designed to recognize those institutions that are committed to doing the most to help families lift themselves out of poverty. The report is the largest and most comprehensive annual report on the outreach of microfinance to the poor and very poor. Panelists also discussed the Global Microcredit Summit in Valladolid, Spain (which was held 8 months later in November). The Summit allowed more than 2000 delegates from over 100 countries to address the major challenges to the field and their solutions. Additionally, Prof Yunus addressed questions from the press concerning the government of Bangladesh's attempts (ultimately successful) to oust him as head of Grameen Bank. The press conference was held at the National Press Club in Washington, DC on March 7, 2011--one day before International Women's Day. |

In 2011, the Microcredit Summit Campaign commissioned Daniel Karslake and Helen Mendoza to produce "Climbing the Ladder: The Story of Jamii Bora." This short film tells how Jamii Bora, a microfinance institution founded by Ingrid Munro and 50 women beggars, is revolutionizing microfinance in Kenya. "Climbing the Ladder" illustrates how Jamii Bora is solving some of the most difficult problems in the Nairobi slums by providing the means for thieves and alcoholics to reform and for beggars and prostitutes to become business women and men. Jamii Bora members have access to financial services (savings and credit), health insurance, business education, an Alcoholics Anonymous-like program, and "the promise land, Kaputei," a sustainable housing complex in the suburbs of Nairobi. "In Jamii Bora, we don't say no to the poorest, most aggressive beggar, ... we don't exclude even criminals, we don't exclude prostitutes. We don't look down on anyone and say, 'You're a bad person.' We say, 'There is a life for you, as well.'" -- Ingrid Munro, founder, Jamii Bora For further information: Microcredit Summit Campaign: www.microcreditsummit.org Jamii Bora www.jamiibora.org Daniel Karslake and Helen Mendoza: everythreeseconds.net |
