Battery Dance Company is a multi-faceted dance company whose mission embraces the many ways in which artists create, innovate and engage with society. Battery Dance is at once a laboratory for creative work, a performing ensemble, a presenter and facilitator for other dance companies, a vehicle for promoting arts education, a cultural ambassador and a designer of programs that foster communication and exchange between and among artists and the public.
Battery produces original dance works choreographed by its artistic director Jonathan Hollander for presentation in New York City and on tour within the U.S. and around the globe. Battery's productions are characterized by choreography and music, drawing inspiration from worldwide sources and reflective of American society and its multiplicity of cultures; contemporary movement vocabulary and themes performed by exceptional dancers trained in classical, modern and folk techniques; intensely engaging movement inspired by and wedded to its musical accompaniment which is often commissioned and performed live.
In collaboration with a diverse array of composers and designers and with its cast of outstanding dancers, Battery has presented more than 50 dances of wide thematic and stylistic range over its 25-year history. Increasingly over the past ten years, the Company has become one of New York City's foremost cultural ambassadors through participation in international performing arts festivals, conferences and symposia in 50 Cities throughout East/Central Europe, Scandinavia, South Asia and the Caribbean.
Battery Dance is also a community-spirited presenter of the annual Downtown Dance Festival, responsible for introducing New Yorkers to over 150 dance companies in its 20 years of free public concerts.
In its Lower Manhattan home-base, equipped with two large studios, the Company provides subsidized rehearsal space for many hundreds of choreographers and dance companies in space-starved Manhattan.
