About us

Aflatoun's mission is to facilitate the development of socially conscious and economically self-reliant citizens by teaching children about financial education in the context of their rights and responsibilities; and to ensure that child social and financial education is viewed as a right for every child globally.

The Aflatoun Programme ensures that Child Social and Financial Education is no longer just the responsibility of the family, but is brought into the sphere of formal education. The Programme targets children aged 6-14 who attend predominantly government run schools. The Programme is designed to be engaging and child-friendly, it uses methods which put children at the centre of the learning process; these methods include songs, games, worksheets, puzzles, and role-play activities. The knowledge and skills that children learn are applied through school-wide savings club where participants are encouraged to save their money regularly. The Programme is implemented around the world by Aflatoun's partner organisations (typically not-for-profit NGO's). The long term aim is for governments to incorporate the Aflatoun Programme into their standard national curriculum.

Currently, the global network of Aflatoun consists of local implementation partners in eleven countries around the world, reaching over 170,000 children. Aflatoun aims to reach 1 million children, with programmes initiated in 100 countries by 2010.

Aflatoun's secretariat is located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
