NAMI Montgomery County (NAMI MC) is a 501(c)(3) organization and the Montgomery County, Maryland affiliate of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) which is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. NAMI MC is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults living with mental illnesses in Montgomery County, Maryland. Since 1978, NAMI MC has provided self-help, support, education and advocacy for people with serious and persistent mental illnesses (often called "consumers"), their families, friends and caregivers.
Our missions is to: (a) Provide information, education, and support for people who live with mental illness, their families and caregivers. (b)Enhance and promote the ability of those impacted by mental illness to be their own best advocate in their daily struggles. (c)Advocate through partnerships and coalitions toward legislative action that improves the quality of life for those impacted by mental illness. (d)Combat the stigma of mental illness through community outreach and education.
In order to achieve this, we offer free educational courses in English and Spanish, ongoing support groups for family members and consumers of mental health services, as well as advocacy on local and state levels. We also offer an informational Helpline in English and Spanish to provide resources and referrals to the community.
NAMI MC carries out its important mission with the support of a thriving Thrift Shop in Rockville, Maryland.Our Thrift Shop means so much to our staff, our loyal patrons, and dedicated volunteers. Through the Thrift Shop, team members and volunteers work side-by-side with individuals who are living with mental illnesses - individuals who are thriving thanks to community supports, including NAMI's education and support programs. The Thrift Shop is an opportunity for everyone to volunteer or work no matter their struggles.
