About us

The Native American Women's Health Education Resource Center is a non-profit, grass roots organization committed to working on social justice issues for Indigenous Peoples. The Resource Center works on issues of Reproductive Rights, Violence Against Women, Environmental Justice, Natural Resource Protection, Cultural Preservation and Indigenous Languages. The Resource Center is located on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in Lake Andes, South Dakota. The agency has many projects the interns get involved in including, but not limited to: a Domestic Violence Prevention Program and Women's Shelter, 24 Hour-Youth Crisis Hotline, Reproductive Health & Rights Program (currently working on the Hyde Amendment & using the internet to do outreach to other reservations in North America), Dakota Language Immersion Program, Food Pantry, and the Clearinghouse which develops Health Education Materials used by Tribes throughout North America...
We have positions for several interns who will be involved in a number of areas mentioned above, according to the intern's area of interest and the organization's current needs. Our program is flexible enough to accommodate a wide spectrum of interests. Interns usually produce educational materials for use in the community or an in-depth report on an issue relevant to the community, as well as provide client services, provide Domestic Violence advocacy, and out-reach services in the community.
Interns must be JUNIORS, SENIORS, OR GRADUATE STUDENTS who are mature, responsible, self-motivators. Preferences will be given to Native American women and women of color. Students with educational backgrounds in women's issues studies, health, environmental studies, the social sciences, counseling or students interested in community development will receive special consideration. These internships range from 3 months to 1 year depending on the individual's schedule.
Internships with the Native American Women's Health Education Resource Center can be a valuable hands on experience in Indigenous Peoples Issues, community and social development and women's issues. The Resource Center is well networked with other women's' groups, and its staff members serve on several National Organizations' Board of Directors.
Free Room and partial board and a small living stipend will be provided. If you have any questions, please call Charon or Colleen at (605) 487-7072. If you are interested in applying for an internship, please send a letter of interest and resume as soon as possible to:
