Nontraditional Employment for Women

Nonprofit or community organization

Last modified: June 12, 2013, 4:13 PM

Description

NEW is a nonprofit organization that helps the construction industry and other blue-collar employers increase their workforce diversity by preparing women for nontraditional jobs in the building and construction trades, public utilities, and transportation industries. Graduates of NEW's skills training programs are placed in union construction careers as carpenters, painters, electricians, laborers, plumbers, elevator mechanics and in public utilities and transportation careers.

NEW is the largest, most successful pre-apprenticeship training program in North America. As the first tradeswomen's organization in the nation, NEW works to change the climate for women in nontraditional work by providing advocacy and technical assistance services to labor unions and employers. NEW is the recipient of the 2004 Exemplary Public Interest Contribution (EPIC) Award from the United States Department of Labor. The EPIC Award honors public interest organizations that have supported equal employment opportunity.
