African Power Initiative is a renewable energy company with a biodiesel focus in East Africa. Our team strives to produce a green fuel that not only serves to power emerging economies into the future, but also empowers rural populations through economic diversification by incorporating their products into the supply.
The environmental issues of fossil fuels are well addressed in today's media, while the economic burden imposed specifically on the developing world is more forgotten. As these countries work to improve their standing in the world, they are often restricted by enormous negative trade-imbalances caused by the high import costs of oil. API hopes to provide a solution to both the environmental and economic challenges poised to East Africa through biodiesel. While other renewable energies such as wind and solar are beginning to provide clean and affordable energy solutions, for transportation and heavy industry sectors more than electricity is needed. API's biodiesel can serve as an energy solution in East Africa where wind and solar can't.
In API's approach to biodiesel, the source of the feedstock is not forgotten. For every litre of diesel made between 2 and 4 kgs of seeds are required. API believes small scale farmers should be beneficiaries this total demand. A developed biodiesel industry in East Africa will supply rural farmers with diversified income to complement traditional crops. To help ensure food production is not compromised by biofuel crops, API only purchases non-edible oilseeds from plants it identifies as being appropriate for intercropping.
API is establishing a holistic approach to biodiesel within East Africa. While being in the interest of the environment, no social or economic factors can be marginalized, but instead enhanced.
