In the New York/Metropolitan and Westchester, there is a dire need for youth and family supportive serivces. Especially in communities faced with poverty, poor educational services, unmet socio-emotional issues, high rates of suicide, violence and drug use. GDS provides recreational, career, educational, counseling and training services to help meet this need.
Growth and Development Services (GDS) was founded in 1996, by Dr. Gary Altheim, a clinical psychologist. GDS is a community based not for organization located in Upper Manhattan, Washington Heights, New York. GDS was created to is help to empower youth, families and the community to Reach its Potential.
GDS' Youth and Family Services (YFS) works with teens and families that are challeged by educational, emotional, behavioral and social issues. GDS Psychologist, Social Workers, and Casemangers work collaborately with other agencies to help individuals and families to GDS has created an innovative therapeutic and recreational model The Reach Your Potetial Model, This comprehesvive approach provides individuals wtih the tools to cope with life's challenges and helps individuals trasform thier lives. Please Join The GDS Team and support the families and communites we serve by being a volunter retreat counselor, advocate, and/or fundraiser. You can be part of an amazing program that is currently building capacity and sustainability. GDS has proven success in empowering individuals and Families to Reach their Potential!. GDS' mission is work with individuals that are challenged by social, emotional, educational, behavioral carreer issues.
According to past interns and outcome evaluations working as a Volunteer/Intern at GDS has proven to be an "excellent learning experience". Interns report both "personal and professional" growth from the internship. Interns will have the opportunity to work hands on with the Development and Marketing Team. Interns can also work directly with the Executive Director and Director of Programs seeking funding, advocating for our clients, writing proposals, managing social media sites and having hands on experience in nonprofit administration. Currently GDS' goal is to build it's Board of Direcotrs, capacity and sustainability to ensure the longevity of our services. GDS tailors the internship to the match the needs of the intern/volunteer and the orgaanization and the community. Hopefully a WIN/WiN/WIN! Camp Volunteers are also needed.
The Washington Heights/Inwood Youth Service Provider Collective (WHYSPC) recently, in November of 2012,GDS recieved a Counseling Award for excellence in program services for youth and families. You can make a huge difference in the lives of individuals that are in dire need of GDS' theapeutic, recreational, educational and career services.
GDS is a nonprofit 501(c)3, a community-based organization, with in NYC headquarters nestled in a beautiful space in the Armory @ 168th Street (Washington Heights, NY). GDS' serves communities in the Bronx, Upper Manhattan and Westchester. GDS utilizes a comprehensive therapeutic model (The Rech Your Potential Model) which has proven success in tranforming youth and families in dire need of our services.
GDS trains youth workers and provides direct therapeutic and recreational, and career services to families that are in in Upper Manhattan, Bronx and Westchester.
