In the New York/Metropolitan and Westchester, there is a dire need for youth and family supportive serivces. Especially in communities faced with poverty, poor educational services, unmet socio-emotional issues, high rates of suicide, violence and drug use. GDS provides recreational, career, educational, counseling, consultation and training services to help meet this need.
Growth and Development Services (GDS) was founded in 1996, by Dr. Gary Altheim, a Child/Adolescent Clinical Psychologist. GDS is a community based organization located in Washington Heights, New York. GDS was created to help to empower youth, families and the community to Reach Their Potential.
GDS' Youth and Family Services (YFS) works with teens and families that are challenged by educational, emotional, behavioral and social issues. GDS psychologists, social workers, and case mangers work with other agencies to help individuals and families.
GDS has created a therapeutic and recreational model called The Reach Your Potential (RYP) Model, This comprehensive approach provides individuals with the tools to cope with life's challenges and helps individuals transform their lives.
Please join the GDS team and support the families and communities we serve by being a volunteer counselor, advocate, and/or fundraiser. You can be part of an amazing program that is currently building capacity and sustainability. GDS has proven success in empowering individuals and families to Reach their Potential!. GDS' mission is work with individuals that are challenged by social, emotional, educational, behavioral career issues.
According to past interns and outcome evaluations working as a Volunteer/Intern at GDS has proven to be an "excellent learning experience". Interns report both "personal and professional" growth from the internship. Interns will have the opportunity to work hands on with the Development and Marketing Team. Interns can also work directly with the Executive Director and Director of Programs seeking funding, advocating for our clients, writing proposals, managing social media sites and having hands on experience in nonprofit administration. Currently GDS' goal is to build it's Board of Directors, capacity and sustainability to ensure the longevity of our services. GDS tailors the internship to the match the needs of the intern/volunteer and the orgaanization and the community.
