Earth Matter NY, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, and application of composting in New York City. Earth Matter operates a Compost Learning Center on Governors Island where, as part of the "Zero Waste Island" initiative, we collect and process food scraps from island food vendors and from source-separation bins placed around the island.
Earth Matter's Compost Learning Center -- funded by the NYC Compost Project, a program of the Department of Sanitation's Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability -- has public open hours on weekends from Memorial Day through the end of September. At this site we also host a 140-hour adult compost operator intro course twice a year.
We also are a partner in the NYC area's "Billion Oyster Project", collecting and curing oyster shells from area restaurants, thus helping to advance this effort to remove oyster shells from the waste stream.
