Growing Places Garden Project, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance the food security of people with limited economic means by donating vegetable gardens and helping them to grow their own food.
GP offers a two year program to eligible garden recipients. Recipients are taught how to maintain the garden and are offered information on how to grow, harvest, use and store their fresh produce throughout the growing season.
Our goal is to make sure that our garden recipients are ready to garden on their own at the end of our two year program. We will continue to provide our graduate recipients with newsletters, answer questions and offer extra seeds (if we have them) to help ensure their long term success.
GP relies on volunteers to help us build and maintain gardens. Volunteers are needed throughout the year. If you would like to volunteer, please submit through our online application.
Garden Mentors Garden Mentors serve every gardener – from the experienced do-it-yourselfer to the self-proclaimed black thumbs. Mentors ensure that our gardens succeed given the skills, needs, and interests of the individual and family gardeners. Minimum commitment of 1 year is required and Mentors can expect to spend between 4-8 hrs/family/year with most of the time served between May through October.
Team Leaders Team Leaders ensure that all phases of installing a garden are completed for a site. He or she serves as the go-to person for a scheduled implementation and handles all the details associated with getting the gardener what they need on a particular day. Team Leaders with pick-up trucks are needed, but not required. Time Commitment: 3 hours per garden installation.
Garden Installation Crew: Each garden requires a crew to install the frames, fill them with soil, and prep them for the gardener's use. Each build is approximately three hours and for three raised beds, it takes about four to five (4-5) volunteers. This is a great service experience for corporations, schools, scouts, church groups or families and friends just looking to have a good time working in the outdoors.
Raised Bed Frame Building: Each fall and winter we assemble volunteer groups to build 4′ x 8′ raised bed frames in our warehouse in Clinton. Each effort takes about 2-3 hours with 7-15 volunteers. During this time we build about 20 frames. Volunteers work with a GP instructor who provides a hands-on tutorial at the beginning of the building session, walking everyone through the "how-to" of frame construction.
