Breakaway enhances education by placing passion and community leadership at the center of the learning and teaching experience. To accomplish this mission, we recruit, train and support passionate college students to lead highly-engaging after school clubs in schools across Los Angeles. Breakaway's clubs are as diverse as its students: clubs currently offered range from poetry to cycling. The thread that runs through all our clubs is that our students learn to channel their passion into solving community problems.

The result is that students are more engaged in their school and take an active role in leadership. By focusing on students' passions, we are able to reach a group of low-income and otherwise marginalized students who may not typically see themselves as leaders.

We are also driving change in the talent pipeline for education. Our Corps members are graduating and pursuing careers in education. Breakaway brings more great teachers into the most important work in the world and better prepares teachers for careers in urban education.
