One of the keys to early reading success is growing up in an environment that values literacy. While schools play a central role, parents and community members can encourage and support children in their reading development in several ways, by:
LINC was founded in 1996 by New York State Regent Emeritus Mimi Lieber. Her vision to create a model that draws on the strengths of a community to support young readers. LINC engages parents and other community members to foster early literacy skills. We know that children who start school without these skills have a much harder time learning, and those who cannot read by third grade are likely to fail academically. We also know that when a community sees the positive results from its efforts, and its children see the importance attached to their educational success, the entire community is strengthened.
