Description

The mission of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) is to secure the full enjoyment of the human rights of all people and communities subject to discrimination or abuse on the basis of sexual orientation or expression, gender identity or expression, and/or HIV status. A US-based non-profit, non-governmental organization, IGLHRC effects this mission through advocacy, documentation, coalition-building, public education, and technical assistance.

    The high prevalence rates and new infection rates of HIV among the LGBTT is attributed to several factors. These factors include: lack of access to reproductive health services; lack of access to specialized awareness/prevention services; lack of specific policy provisions to protect or provide services to LGBT; and lack of access to educations (school drop out) and lack of access to opportunities to meet basic needs. At the centre of these causes is poverty in both rural and urban areas which stands at 37.5% and 16.9% respectively. Most of the LGBTT (52.3%) are involved in survival jobs 19.6% do so because of lack of support from friends and family because of homophobia. Other factors include bullying and exposure (15.9%); poverty (20.6) and not being in marriage (assured conjugal relationship ). All these factors are strongly linked to vulnerability, poverty and its author is state sponsored homophobia.
