About Us

Grandmother Project - Change through Culture (GMP) is an American and Senegalese nonprofit organization established in 2005. GMP's mission is to improve the health and well-being of women and children in developing countries by developing programs that are built on cultural roles and values, that build community capacity to drive community, that promote intergenerational communication and that are grandmother-inclusive.

GMP's innovative approach recognizes the central role of grandmothers, and elders in general, in matters related to women and children in non-Western cultures and harnesses their knowledge and natural leadership capacities to influence positive change on issues such as early marriage, teen pregnancy, female genital mutilation, and children’s education. The GMP strategy has also been used to address maternal and child nutrition/health, and pregnancy and newborn care.
