<p>The Grandmother Project (GMP) is an American non-profit organization established in 2005. GMP develops community programs that improve the health and well-being of women and children in Africa, Asia and Latin America by building on positive cultural roles and values. Senior women, or<em> grandmothers</em>, are a key cultural resource in all non-western societies. GMP has developed a <em>grandmother-inclusive approach </em>in which the experience and wisdom of grandmothers is utilized to promote change in the lives of women, children and families. This approach has been used to address various issues including: maternal and child nutrition/health; pregnancy and newborn care; early and forced marriage of young girls; teen pregnancy; and female genital mutilation. In all cases, grandmothers have proved to be a valuable resource for promoting sustained change within families and communities. GMP’s approach is one of organizational capacity building. In this light, all of GMP's work is carried out in collaboration with other organizations that have ongoing operational programs at the community level. GMP aims to strengthen the capacity of such organizations to systematically involve GMs as resource persons in their programs in order to promote positive change in families and communities. To date, most of GMP's work has been in french-speaking countries an GMP aims to produce all written reports, methodologies etc. in both English and French in order to make them widely accessible to other organizations that are interested in these approaches.</p>
