About us

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) was founded in 1981 by a group of U.S. journalists to fight for the rights of journalists around the world to report the news freely, without fear of reprisal. Today, the work of CPJ is vitally important to journalists and news organizations around the world who rely on our advocacy and support when confronting censorship and repression. CPJ's staff of regional specialists document individual press freedom vioalations while mounting sustained campaigns to win the release of imprisoned colleagues, repeal repressive press laws around the world, and demand justice when journalista are attacked or killed.
