Horizons for Homeless Children improves the lives of young homeless children in Massachusetts and helps their families to succeed by providing high-quality early education, opportunities for play, and comprehensive family support services. We also advocate on behalf of young children, train educators and human services providers, and provide research on the impact of early education on homeless children.
Volunteering with the Playspace Program
The Playspace Program, with its Greater Boston Region office located in Roxbury, creates and installs Playspaces inside of over 50 family homeless shelters in the Greater Boston (a complete list of Playspace locations is below). We then recruit, train and place volunteers from the community in these Playspaces to provide healthy, educational and fun play for the children living in the shelters.
Our volunteers commit to 2 hours per week for at least six months. All of our volunteers attend a training prior to being placed in the shelter. Please click here for a list of our upcoming Training dates and locations.
To become a PAL and register for an upcoming Training, fill out a Volunteer Application here.
The Greater Boston region has playspaces in Boston, Brighton, Cambridge, Charlestown, Dorchester, East Boston, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Medford, Newton, Norwell, Quincy, Roxbury, Somerville, Watertown, and Weymouth. We have programs statewide which are managed by our other regional office. For a complete list of program locations click here.
