Horizons for Homeless Children Greater Boston Playspace Program

About Us

Organizational Mission:

Horizons for Homeless Children improves the lives of young homeless children in Massachusetts and helps their families to succeed by providing high-quality early education, opportunities for play, and comprehensive family support services.

Volunteering with the Playspace Program

Horizons for Homeless Children builds age-appropriate, child-friendly, educational Playspaces in shelters and stock them with books, developmental toys, and art supplies.

Playspaces are staffed by trained volunteers, called Playspace Activity Leaders (PALs), who commit two hours weekly for at least six months. PALs enable parents to to participate in activities such as parenting groups, budgeting classes or job searches.

Our volunteers commit to 2 hours per week for at least six months. All of our volunteers attend a training prior to being placed in the shelter. Please click here for a list of our upcoming training dates and locations.

To become a PAL and register for an upcoming Training, fill out a Volunteer Application here.

The Greater Boston region has Playspaces in Brighton, Cambridge, Charlestown, Dorchester, Roxbury, East Boston, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Medford, Somerville, and Waltham. We have programs statewide which are managed by our other regional office. For a complete list of program locations click here.
