About Rare Rare is a fast-growing, international environmental organization that runs social marketing campaigns to change the behaviors of communities that live in, and around, areas of important biodiversity. Over the past five years, the organization has tripled its staff and quintupled its budget – a result of burgeoning demand throughout our sector for more innovative methods to engage local communities, and change the way they relate to nature. To that end, Rare searches the globe for replicable, sustainable environmental success stories, and then trains conservation leaders to develop and market these proven practices to benefit both community livelihoods and biodiversity.
All Rare projects are managed by local partners; its focus is on building community support for conservation and developing local capacity among the world's leading local environmental organizations. Rare has five offices around the world in Arlington, Virginia USA; Bogor, Indonesia; Guadalajara, Mexico; Kunming, China; and Bohol, Philippines. Rare is committed to hiring entrepreneurial, best-in-their-field staff at all levels of the organization.=== A Rare Approach

Rare Conservation Fellow Duan Honglian's Pride campaign in Gaoligong, China set out to help this mountainside community use energy-efficient stoves and electric cookers in order to reduce wood harvesting for fuel. In the process, her efforts also helped pave the way for the community to get an improved electric grid. Pride campaigns are Rare's signature program that engage the community to build pride around unique natural assets through a social marketing campaign. These campaigns are created and organized by local conservation leaders that have been trained by Rare.
