Last modified: April 2, 2013, 10:16 PM

Description

Sen. Ed Murray has represented Seattle's 43rd Legislative District since 1995 and currently serves as the Senate Democratic Leader. He recently launched an exploratory committee to become Seattle's next mayor, and is planning a full-fledged campaign once his duties during the 2013 legislative session conclude.

Murray lives with his partner of 21 years, Michael Shiosaki, and has long been a civil rights champion. Murray prime sponsored Washington state's historic marriage equality law, which voters upheld by approving Referendum 74 in 2012. Previously, Murray sponsored the 2002 Safe Schools bill, protecting sexual minority youth from physical and verbal harassment, and also sponsored a landmark bill banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation signed into law in 2006. If elected, Ed would be Seattle's first openly gay mayor.

One of the most respected and accomplished elected officials in Washington, Murray has led on a wide range of issues. As chair of the House Capital Budget Committee, he drove legislation that doubled funding for low-income housing.

Murray also chaired the House Transportation Committee, where he negotiated an end to gridlock on transportation reforms, producing the first new revenue and major transportation construction package in 13 years. Two years later he led another statewide package of projects, including the replacement of the Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle, representing the largest investment in Washington's transportation infrastructure in state history. Murray also successfully sponsored legislation matching Washington's car emission standards to the highest in the nation.
