The Haiti Medical Education (HME) Project is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose goal is to coordinate and enhance the Haitian medical education following the country's devastating earthquake. The Haitian medical education system, already well short of international standards before the earthquake, was severely damaged, with a loss of both human and physical resources. Without proper medical education institutions, Haiti runs a serious risk of losing an entire generation of medical personnel unless urgent action is taken. Haiti's dependence on international physicians is unsustainable: only Haitians can truly bring healing to Haiti.
During the past year, HME has proven its capability to get things done on the ground in a collaborative approach with its partners. For example, HME is contracting and providing internet connection and a computer lab to Haiti's state medical school (UEH/FMP), coordinating remote live video medical lectures by prominent academicians in North America and Europe, and establishing relationships with the key players in the medical education field in Haiti and abroad. We are also working on improving curriculum and remote journal access for students and residents, and strengthening continuing medical education (CME) programs for practicing physicians. All of this has been accomplished in little more than a year, and we're just getting started.
