The Legal Action Center is a non-profit law firm and policy organization with offices in New York City and Washington, D.C. that specializes in the areas of alcohol and drug addiction, HIV/AIDS and criminal justice. The Center's mission is to fight discrimination against and protect the privacy of individuals with histories of drug or alcohol problems, HIV/AIDS and/or criminal records. The Center conducts precedent-setting impact litigation to establish and protect the civil rights and privacy rights of these individuals under anti-discrimination laws (including the Americans with Disabilities Act), confidentiality laws (including those protecting HIV and drug or alcohol treatment information) and constitutional guarantees; provides related legal services to these people and the providers that serve them in New York State and nationwide; and also advocates for sound public policies in the areas of addiction, criminal justice and AIDS.
