LIFT-Boston's mission is to combat poverty and expand opportunity for all people in the United States. We envision a day when all people in our country will have the opportunity to achieve economic security and pursue their life goals.
LIFT-Boston is a community-based nonprofit organization that operates three resource centers in the Greater Boston area to help low-income individuals and families obtain the resources and services needed to become economically self-sufficient. LIFT-Boston utilizes an innovative and cost-effective model that trains volunteer advocates – dedicated and talented college students – to work one-on-one with clients to secure employment, housing, and basic necessities, maximize income through public benefit supports and access other vital social services and resources. A fundamental aspect of LIFT's model is a focus on empowerment through life skills education. Working toward their goals, clients develop an important internal "toolkit" for progress and resiliency that enables them to move forward independently, strengthening their goal-setting abilities, problem-solving skills, knowledge of community resources, and ability to advocate for themselves.Simultaneously, the LIFT experience pushes volunteer advocates to grapple with Boston's most challenging issues related to poverty, race, inequality, and policy.
LIFT-Boston has been serving families in Massachusetts since 2001, we have three centers -- in Boston, Somerville and in Cambridge. LIFT-Boston is part of a growing movement; beyond Boston, LIFT serves four additional regions: Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC.
